U.S. Suspends Aid to Somalia’s Government

Details have not been released regarding how long the suspension will last after a warehouse of food was reportedly destroyed.

The State Department announced that it has suspended all assistance to Somalia’s federal government after allegations were made that a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse had been destroyed. Certain Somali officials are accused of destroying the U.S.-funded warehouse and seizing approximately 76 tons of stored food meant to aid vulnerable Somali citizens, without notifying or coordinating with their international donor countries, including the U.S.

The State Department stated, “Any resumption of assistance will be dependent upon the Somali Federal Government, taking accountability for its unacceptable actions and taking appropriate remedial steps.”

The agency has not indicated how much assistance to Somalia will be affected by the suspension, or how long the suspension is expected to last. Last year, the U.S. contributed over $2 billion to the WFP to provide emergency food aid to those affected by different crises.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For officials in the State Department as they examine how to proceed with any future U.S. aid to Somalia
  • For wisdom for the president as he oversees the United States’ relationships with other countries, including Somalia.
